CBD as a treatment for addiction

In the previous article we briefly discussed how CBD can aid in the treatment of addiction and even alleviate the symptoms of drug withdrawals. This article will focus on a more in depth explanation on how it works and the benefits of using CBD to treat addiction. Though it may seem surprising.

CBD comes from the hemp plant, while Marijuana is a plant on it’s own. Marijuana contains THC which is what causes people to experiencing the feeling of being high. CBD on the other hand counteracts the effects of THC. Thus making it a safe and non addictive method to treat addiction.

CBD and Addiction

These days there are so many drugs available. Some legal, others illegal. Legal or not, these drugs often lead to addiction and at times even death.

Research shows that CBD can act as an inhibitor to regulate addictive behaviours. This means that CBD can have promising benefits for many addictions, such as nicotine, opioids and alcohol.

A study conducted with nicotine users found that when they used CBD whenever they craved nicotine, the number of cigarettes they smoked decreased by more than 40%. A similar test with opioid users showed a comparable result.

How does it work?

CBD influences the endocannabinoid system. Chemicals called endocannabinoids and receptors known as the CB1 and CB2 receptors make up this complex system. Endocannabinoids bind with either CB1 or CB2 receptors to help modulate levels of certain neurotransmitters.

Neurotransmitters are responsible for the control of our moods, sleep, appetite and behaviours. They are substances that are present in our nervous systems. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is involved in addictive behaviour. This neurotransmitter is responsible for the enhancement of drugs. Which increases the risk of a relapse for former drug users.

As mentioned previously while THC is the addictive chemical compound, CBD is not. CBD is in fact the antagonist of 5-HT1a serotonin receptors. This controls the compulsive behaviours and stress response.

It simply means that CBD blocks the serotonin receptors. These serotonin receptors are responsible for the pleasurable brain response, getting “high”. It is also responsible for the stress reactions which is what drives people to use drugs. This makes CBD helpful with the recovery treatment of drug addicts.

Benefits of CBD as addiction treatment

  • It is non addictive.

These are just some of the benefits of CBD. There is so more and CBD can also help treat other ailments as well.
